The 1981 Boy Scout National Jamboree Fort A. P. Hill, northern Virginia Page 4
Staff identification was just starting to expand from mostly official, The OA Service Corp, Trading Post neckerchiefs and Aquatic Staff, to other semi official or private issue. Issuing patches for Staff members would explode at future Jamborees. |

![]() (below) In 1981 more hats were introduced for identification of staff members. It was a good idea, no armbands, no patches, just look at the staff members face and see his hat. Not many collectors sought out the hats but there are dozens of them. |

(above) The red beret used at the 1977 Jamboree was replaced with a
red and khaki “snap back” baseball style cap. This was the official
hat of the Jamboree. ( below) Contingent patches were being replaced by Jamboree shoulder patches, although some council still made them. Contingents had T shirts and other items that might be thought of as collectible. Sardines from Maine and Max Silber buckles had become a Jamboree tradition. |

![]() Southern Indiana especially around Bloomington, is famous for it’s limestone. Quarries ship limestone all over the USA for construction projects. This Indiana shaped piece of limestone was a friendship/trade item in 1981. With the widespread use of JSP’s, these types of items would fade from the Jamboree scene. |
![]() Sardines from Maine had become a Jamboree tradition since the 1950’s. I comment elsewhere that I have wondered if anyone actually ate them because so many sardine tins can be found intact in old collections. 1981 the printed cans were actually empty and sardines in a separate container. Scouts could sample the sardines without damaging the collectible can, brilliant. (below) The six BSA Regions again took advantage of the opportunity to provide insignia to Jamboree bound Scouts. Patches, neckerchiefs, back patches, East central Region even had a belt buckle. The modern regions didn’t seem to restrict their insignia as much as the earlier pre-1972 Regions. |
